It was a western on a huge scale, which hasn't been duplicated since. The actors were all familiar at the time, but I thought John Wayne should have been either the sheriff at the end or the George Peppard character at the end. I realize it was most probably John Ford who cast him in the Civil War episode, which Ford also directed. "How the West Was Won" is a schmaltzy love letter to the mythos of the "Old West". Accompanied with an overture and an intermission this is classic filmmaking on a grandiose scale. It's just a shame that the multiple stories are inconsistent in their relative qualities; and are littered with cliches.
